Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
