The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
